If you are going after very small birds, you will need a lens with a long focal length. If you are trying to photograph larger birds, a shorter focal length lens may be more appropriate.

You should also consider the aperture of the lens. A narrower aperture will give you a greater depth of field, which can be helpful when photographing birds in flight.

Finally, you will want to think about the weight and size of the lens. Lenses heavier and bulkier may be more difficult to carry around and use in the field.
